So, back when Market Street used to have cooking classes, my daughter and I would go to their Thanksgiving pie class. Since pies were our only Turkey day responsibility (we celebrate at my mother-in-law’s) this was a great way to make traditional pies and keep my kitchen clean.
Oh, and bond with my daughter. Love you, honey!
Anyway, the class was taught by a lovely lady named Ruth Thompson. Ruth shared her family’s pecan pie recipe with the class, and we still use it even though the classes stopped several years back.
Well, Ruth may not be teaching cooking classes at Market Street anymore, but she is busy making a much bigger impact on our community. She is in the process of starting Hugs Cafe, a new restaurant to be located in downtown McKinney. Hugs will serve several of their own recipes, but they also have recipes that have been contributed by celebrity chefs from across the region.
We are lucky that news of a new restaurant downtown is not as surprising as it used to be. But Hugs Cafe brings a little something special to the table.
The Mission of Hugs Cafe is to create an inviting place of training and employment for adults with special needs while providing dignity, self-worth and developing respect in the community.
You see, Ruth didn’t just teach the Thanksgiving pie class at Market Street. She taught classes to adults with special needs twice a week. Before Market Street, she worked with special needs adults in Colorado. This work led to Ruth’s mission, and McKinney is privileged to be selected as the site of the very first Hugs Cafe.
If you are like me and think this is just about the best news in McKinney in a long time, maybe you can help out. Our friends over at Local Yocal are partnering with Hugs Cafe to help raise funds so they can open already! They are offering a special three course Tour de Steak at Local Yocal on May 15 at 7 pm. The cost is $100 and proceeds benefit Hugs Cafe. I’ve eaten Matt’s steak at Local Yocal. You will definitely get your money’s worth.
If you can’t make the event, you can still donate. Let’s see if we can make Hugs Cafe happen here in McKinney!
