You know the dream. The one where you are standing in front of a crowded room giving a presentation? Naked?
If you haven’t had it, be glad, because it’s a nightmare that will give you more nightmares. But if you have, or the thought of it freaks you out, I’ve got great news for you! The McKinney Motivators are here. This new McKinney Toastmasters group is the place for you if you need to work out your agitation about public speaking, improve your leadership skills, meet some interesting people, or just build your self-confidence.
Toastmasters is an international organization, with nearly 300,000 members in 122 countries. The organization got its start in 1924 with a mission to “empower individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders.”
The Toastmasters program takes people through a step by step format, incrementally building communication and leadership skills. Newcomers start with very basic tasks and add small building blocks as they go forward.
At each meeting there are two planned speakers, and members are assigned to evaluate the speeches, time them, count “ahs” and pay attention to grammar and usage. There are opportunities for impromptu speaking as well, so you are prepared not only for the big presentation at the corporate conference, but for the sixty seconds you are on the elevator with the CEO.
Is Toastmasters for You?
- Do you sell anything?
- Have to talk to customers or coworkers?
- Teach anything?
- Ever need to persuade your kids or spouse of anything?
- Do fundraising?
- Work in a church ministry?
- Interact with other human beings?
Of course I’m being a little silly here, but truly, Toastmasters is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to feel more competent and comfortable in their speaking skills.
As a new member, you’ll start out in the two basic books, Competent Communication and Competent Leadership, which walk you through the first projects you need to get started as a Toastmaster. You get constructive feedback as you go along, so you know what to work on and what to keep doing. It’s easy to get started and fulfilling to keep going.
McKinney Motivators – The McKinney Toastmasters Group
Each Wednesday evening at the Spoons Garage, the only community-based Toastmasters group in McKinney meets. They got their start in January and are quickly working their way to the twenty members needed to charter the club. At the meetings you’ll find experienced Toastmasters to help you get started with the club, you’ll learn some really interesting things about other people, and you’ll be able to jump in and start speaking when you’re ready.
Ed Meissner, who has been involved with Toastmasters for many years and is helping to launch the McKinney group, says that at the weekly meetings, “we all help eachother. It’s a positive and supportive environment.”
Of course, these Toastmasters have come to appreciate the environment and several arrive a little early to partake of the tasty Spoons menu.
So why not step up your communication game a little and join the new McKinney Toastmasters group? I hope I’ll see you there!McKinney Motivators Toastmasters Club Wednesday nights at 7 pm Spoons Garage 100 E. Louisiana Street (Enter the Garage through the Kentucky entrance) McKinney, TX 75069
