One of my favorite things about summer here in McKinney that the pace slows down just a bit. Maybe it’s because my teens don’t have quite so many places to be, but summer definitely feels a little more relaxed to me. And nothing is better on a relaxing summer weekend than a great glass of wine. McKinney has no shortage of choices when it comes to excellent wine, so why not check some of them out this weekend?
Wine on the McKinney Square
Two excellent storefronts on the downtown McKinney square feature fabulous Texas wines. You can sit down, sip some of the award-winning blends and enjoy live music while you do. It doesn’t get more chill than that.
Landon Winery sits at the corner of Louisiana and Kentucky and has one of the best patios in town. They feature their own wines (the Texan is pricy but WOW! so good!). Join them this weekend and sip to the tunes of Joel Clarke on Friday night or Duane Bates on Saturday night.
Lone Star Cellars sits over at Virginia and Kentucky and they provide a showcase for great Texas wines. You can enjoy live music on both Friday and Saturday while you sip some of Texas’ best offerings. And if you want to be sure, you can try the Napa Wine Station, which gives you the opportunity to taste and compare Texas wines with wines from around the world. “Dare to compare. You may be pleasantly surprised….”
McKinney Farmer’s Market
If you are looking for some local wines to add to your cellar (you have one, right?), then you don’t need to do anything but head over to the McKinney Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings. There you’ll find Caudalie Crest and Landon Winery ready for you to taste their selections and stock up your wine rack (more realistic?). And when you find some wines you love, they can recommend some tasty accompaniments for your wine among the other Farmer’s Market vendors. What a fun way to spend a Saturday morning!
Get out of Town
If you want to visit a winery, you don’t need to fly out to California. Right here in North Texas we are blessed with some great ones. If you’re up for a little drive why not try these?
Caudalie Crest opens their Celina vineyard one evening each month for “Wined Down Friday,” and tonight’s the night! You can bring a picnic dinner or purchase cheese, appetizers and delicious desserts to accompany Caudalie’s excellent wines. They grow the cabernet grapes right there at the winery. Do not miss the goat cheese, courtesy of the gorgeous Dwarf Nigerian Dairy Goats who reside at the vineyard. It’s truly delicious.
And if you are a performer? It’s open mike baby!
You are an excellent singer! -Cabernet Sauvignon
Mitas Hill is a gorgeous winery right here in McKinney. Every Saturday and Sunday they open their doors at 1 and 3 for tours of the beautiful property and vineyard, and then offer tastings of their delicious wines. Mitas Hill will be opening a spectacular lodge this summer, so while you are there you might check it out for your upcoming event or weekend getaway.
Prefer to Stay in?
I get it. Sometimes a lazy McKinney weekend means staying in and relaxing. Maybe cooking a delicous meal with fresh local ingredients from our Farmer’s Market. But you will need the perfect wine to go with it. Let me recommend The McKinney Wine Merchant. This little spot in downtown offers a fantastic selection of wines and lots of helpful advice for selecting the perfect bottle. Definitely check it out.
Sip Your McKinney Wine in Style
Finally, maybe need to add a little sass to your glass ;). Local artist Toni Andrukaitis will lead a class in painting wine glasses at Art on the Veranda on Saturday. They provide everything you need to paint two beautiful glasses. You can even bring some wine to sip while you paint.
You are a great artist! – Pinot Grigio
Have a wonderful weekend, McKinney! Cheers!
